I just wanna say something about that Scorsese comment. I kinda get what he's saying and that post you reblogged made intrept what he said in a different (more understandable) way but still when he said "It isnt human beings trying to convey emotional and psychological experiences.." like it just hits me hard cause like. I've really connected with some of the characters and some movies really do touch in important matters (well, at least in my opinion) they do convey emotional experiences(1)
Like captain America the first avenger is about how important it is for us to be ourselves and to fight for what we belive in. How you don't need to be strong and big to be a real super hero. I couldn't make this up, the movie transmitted this idea, this message, to me. How is that not an emotional experience. It isnt exactly like what the movie Silence by Scorsese did but it is still an important message I think. I'm not trying to fight or anything. I really just wanted to share my thoughts (2)
I hope I didn't sound agressive cause it wasn't my intention at all. And I also hope I got the message across, even when I'm not that eloquent. Thanks for reading (3/3)
You don’t sound aggressive at all, don’t worry, and you’re just sharing your opinion, it’s perfectly fine!
I tend to agree more with Scorsese because I do understand what he means in the general scope of things, and I also have a hard time identifying with the characters from the MCU (speaking as a girl who grew up reading Comics and had a huge connection with Rogue). But I’ll just say it, that doesn’t invalidate one thing, and that is that everyone experiences emotions conveyed through cinema differently. While to me it might have been superficial, to others it doesn’t have to be, and we need to settle this at least: whether a movie is bad or good, a blockbuster or indie, a b-movie or a rom-com, I mean, you’re allowed to like things, as shamelessly as possible.
I didn’t see all Marvel movies and don’t really intend to but for me for example I think Black Panther conveyed a lot of human emotion that I could either relate to or sympathise with, and that’s probably because I enjoy a good Shakespearean angst ride, but at the same time I do think it has more depth than the regular marvel movie because it provoked me, as an audience, a lot more (and okay, okay, THAT scene in the museum? Fucked me right up, but that’s my art history ass talking lmao).
Now THIS is like, just my opinion. And when I do agree with scorsese it’s on the grounds that I do think these movies have been turned into a theme-park kind of cinematic experience. The thing is, and I don’t really know how to put this, but... whether they’re good or bad (and like, on the grounds of technicality, like, engineering, if you want, they’re good, or well some of them, they answer all these pre-requisites and they’re crafted with a specific intention in mind) people are allowed to enjoy whatever the shit they enjoy, and we shouldn’t take Sorsese’s comments too much to heart BECAUSE he’s making a critique aimed at an industry rather than the particular experience of enjoying cinema
Though of all he said, the one bit I found debatable was precisely the bit about human emotion. Like, people experience things different, and to me that was the one thing that was less objective and more on his personal experience, but at the same time I also understand that cause I do relate.
One thing that also struck me about his comment was what he said about actors, and if I am being honest, I think when he talks about the lack guman emotion he’s also commenting on the conditions actors work under (with not knowing what scene they’re filming, even what movie, and being kept hidden from this and that). And that affects the performance. It’s a really unprofessional way of dealing with actors and just... letting them do their job. So I do think he had that in mind, and this guy is pretty good at this so he sorta knows what he’s saying.
But the bottom line is this: if you have a good experience with these movies, then treasure it, cause they’re yours. People are going a bit crazy over this, either staunchly defending Scorsese or staunchly defending marvel and like, you can enjoy both. I will die in this earth defending Van Helsing (2014) and back when I was studying cinema and said this, people gave me a glare and said “just say you love Godard instead, it looks better” (no joke, actual thing someone told me), and I have to say, I hate one and the other tbh. The fact of the matter is, Scorsese is really not an elitist guy (unlike Spielberg with this Netflix bullshit he’s pulling) and his criticism overall was aimed at the industry, which is perfectly valid. But at the end of the day, you enjoy what you enjoy. I mean, I’ve watched marvel movies as well that I enjoyed, and others I am very critical about like, I thought Endgame was bad because it was desperate to get too deep and in end it was a bit of shameless fanservice, but to those fans, it was a good experience, and then to others it was just enjoyable, so
Funny though I’ve never watched Silence LMAO though I’m dying to watch 3 or 4 americans trying to pronounce ‘cristóvão’
